Amen sista...

I have actually been exploring this topic on an even deeper level. Digital has made our focus overly directed towards bite-sized, straight-to-the-point communication; 140 characters to the 3 sentence email. While these are great for stating facts, the art of the story has gotten lost.

There's a phrase "facts tell, stories sell" which resonates with me as my story telling skills could use improvement. So I took a story telling class last week which was incredibly helpful and am considering taking more. I am currently redesigning my website and the messaging of my company. It will be interesting to see how my emphasis on the story of Music Interactive pays off.

Looking forward to our next "no phones" meal.

Comment on Social Networks Stealing the Punch? by David

When my 10-year came up a few years back I had every intention of going, and as I purchased my ticket my excitement to show that that weird long-haired, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing quiet awkward kid had actually done some unique stuff since leaving Mississippi. However, as your HSBFF put it, the people I wanted so badly to get in the same room 10 years later I already kept in touch with, and via FB I quickly learned that literally ALL of my friends that I still kept up with would be passing on the trip home for scheduling, financial, or other reasons (general lack of interest). I THEN found out that the ONLY girl I hated throughout HS was coming from AFRICA of all places to once again annoy the crap out of me. I promptly cancelled my ticket and my HS friends and I suggested across the system of tubes that is the internet that a 15-year reunion might be more practical.

-on a side note, the following year I happened upon the HHS class of 2000's reunion when I was in town and had a blast. However in retrospect, their class sucked way less than mine did as a whole.

So to answer your question, no. I did not feel beaten to the punch. What I learned is that social networking just helped me bypass a likely disappointing reunion. ALSO it made me realize that I, like my friends, had left our town harboring little nostalgia and more a press towards the future. It would appear that while the first step was to stay in touch after HS, which FB allowed us to do. The second (and more important for me) is that I can't depend on a HS reunion to bring me face-to-face with the people I enjoy being around, that's something we have to seek out ourselves...leading me to the conclusion that social networks are IN THE PROCESS of cleaning up interpersonal relationships and trimming the fat so we can more easily identify the relationships that are worth traveling to maintain in person from the rest.

My darling, perfect daughter Jessica,

You are the light of my life, the apple of my eye, and forever my most beloved nugget of joy. You spread your warmth around like Nutella on a warm piece of toast. How lucky we all are to have you in our lives.

And while you are perfect in every way and are almost completely above reproach, Mother recommends that you turn off your phone and not subject yourself or engage in prolonged and unnecessary patter.

There will always be a need for niche communicators -- we hire crisis experts, media trainers, designers, etc. -- and in the future we will need specialists to help with social media. I've advocated for years that as communicators we need to add "social skills" to what we do on a daily basis. We're getting there. I think the challenge we're facing, unlike other areas of communications, is that new technology encroaches on our job. Media trainers, for instance, haven't had to change what they do for years, yet, when we look at social media there is something new happening all the time. In my opinion, it's the pace of change that is keeping social media from becoming integrated into the profession. This is a good topic and glad you brought it up.

Nice title: "Climbing Off the Sx Wagon?" Ha ha ha.

DRISKILL BOUNCER
The bouncer at the Driskill Bar is a total jerk. He totally ignored me as I waited behind his precious velvet rope to be let in. No words, no look, no caring.

Stupid Driskill.

BRANDS
I bought belVita cookies and a Nike+ FuelBand based on their presence at SXSW.

belVita was giving out cookies at the convention center. I posted <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevegarfield/6994048299/" rel="nofollow">a picture</a>.

Nike+ was on a panel and then had that massive setup downtown. I've <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/search/fuelband%20stevegarfield" rel="nofollow">tweeted</a> an <a href="http://offonatangent.blogspot.com/2012/03/nike-at-sxsw-and-nike-fuelband-setup.html" rel="nofollow">blogged</a>.

PEOPLE
It's all about people, and I had a great time seeing old friends and making new ones. Nice to chat in the Samsung Lounge.

SXSW Music went through a similar phase and now it's well past out of control. It morphed from an industry insider event to see what's next to a brand sponsored, all are welcome mega music fest. In ways, you could say the brands killed it for the insiders as they were only concerned about more and more attention, which meant more and more inclusion. So SXSW got richer with more sponsorship dollars and now the music badges are almost worthless as no one goes to panels and tons of brand parties which require no badge. The same appears to be happening for SXSWi, but can we as brand marketers blame anyone but ourselves?

I still think Sx will be useful for a few years to come as new layers of exclusivity are added on, but it won't be the budding flower bed of awesome from years past. Those greener pastures are already being cultivated and now it's up to us to find them.

And, isn't discovery what it's all about...

It requires more than capital to swing business. You have got to hold the A. I. D. degree to make do - Advertising, Initiative, and Dynamics.
The man which will use his skill and constructive imagination to view the amount they can give for the dollar, as an alternative to how little he is able to give for any dollar, is likely to succeed.
